Captain Hakon: Version 2.0

Development seems to be moving much faster than expected, and as a result, Captain Hakon is now at version 2.0.

The NightShade Chronicles: Key-frame Animation Test



The NightShade Chronicles is scheduled to be a 2D action adventure game  that is currently being developed along side Project RF. It will see releases on mobile platforms as well as Windows and Mac OS X.

What the NightShade Project intends to accomplish is a fun and engaging game that will present interesting challenges to players by putting them up against close shave encounters and puzzles that require a bit of resourcefulness to solve. 

The NightShade character has been through versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 5.1.


The Idea behind these revisions is to reach a final version that is animation and engine ready. 

Below are the last 3 versions prior to 5.1, with version 5.1 being the final version:

Version 5.1 (Animation Ready)

What makes version 5.1 very different from previous versions is the accurate vector mapping of different joints and body parts that would make animation much easier and more 'cat like'.

Below is a key-frame animation test with version 5.0 to ensure the joints are mapped correctly:

The animation test was for the sake of making sure the different regions of the object moved properly. This is not representative of the final animations that will make it into the game.

As development continues, further details will be revealed!

Project R.F Character Design: Captain Hakon Version 1.0

Project RF. Captain Hakon Version 1.0


The previous update briefly looked at version 3.0 of MoyRah's character design, detailing the changes and refinements that have been made since version 1.0 of the character concept.

Whilst refinements are being made to ensure the final MoyRah  concept meets specification, preliminary design work has already begun on 'Captain Hakon' (Old Norse name meaning 'High Son'). 

Captain Hakon is a character with some rather important responsibilities which include commanding the Andromedaen fleet.

The idea behind this character in particular is to successfully portray a well respected 'authority figure' in a military science fiction context. The first steps to achieving this are:


  1. Identifying the right base model: Considering the future plans we have for the Residuum Factor saga, having characters that are distinct and memorable is extremely important. If we look at the top of this page, the image portrays a character, with a certain expression and dress style.  Even with little to no information about Captain Hakon, the image is capable of conveying a certain mood or a vague sense of who he is. This is made possible because the base model is capable of pronouncing those attributes that will define the eventual character.
  2. The outfit design: The outfit design is just as important as having the right base model. because it is capable of amplifying the personality that is being conveyed. Looking at the image above, the outfit, although basic in design is successfully portraying a character with certain rankings that are symmetrical in placement. With the addition of the cape, it becomes obvious that the character could possibly be an authority figure, or a perfectionist with a certain demeanour.

All these add to the definition of the character. 

Work has already commenced on Captain Hakon version 2.0, and further modifications will ensure that the final character concept is the definitive choice.

Project RF. MoyRah Concept Version 3.0

As development continues, so does the refinement of the MoyRah concept. The digital art piece above is a depiction of MoyRah version 3.0, as the concept has undergone 2 revisions so far.

Every part of the character design has been kept simple, as the aim is to create an easily recognisable, memorable and distinct character. This character must fit into the world that is being created.  

This particular digital art piece is still a work in progress. However the following changes have been made:


  1. Short hair style in favour of a Pony tail or loosened hair.
  2. Emblem now added to the upper arm. Chest emblem remains.
  3. The inclusion of earrings: The actual stock image already contained the earrings. After the edit, the earrings seemed to fit in quite nicely with the rest of the outfit design.

MoyRah version 3.0 is the closest version to the final version as it contains refinements that will make it to the 3D model.

At the moment, work is being completed on Captain Hakon version 1.0, who will be modelled after professional actor Carl Wharton.
